Learn how the Smith machine works, which exercises suit it, and how to set the bar, safety catches, stance, and load for training.
The Smith machine is a strength-training station with a barbell that travels along fixed vertical or slightly angled rails. This guided path can be used for exercises such as squats, presses, and lunges.
The rails guide the bar while you still control your posture, tempo, and range of motion. Depending on the model, the bar can be set at different heights and loaded with weight plates. Its movement feels different from a free barbell, so adjust your setup and technique rather than treating the two as identical.
Check the bar height and set the safety catches before lifting. Choose a stance that lets you move comfortably and use a load you can control throughout every repetition. If the machine or exercise is unfamiliar, ask a qualified trainer to demonstrate the setup.
