Calves: exercises and practical training guidance

Explore calf exercises using bodyweight, dumbbells, or machines, with practical advice on technique, variations, and safer training.

Calf training includes standing and seated raises performed with bodyweight, dumbbells, barbells, or dedicated machines. Select variations that match your equipment and experience.

About calf training

The calf muscles contribute to plantar flexion at the ankle. Standing raises generally place more emphasis on the gastrocnemius, while seated raises relatively increase the contribution of the soleus. A controlled range of motion and steady foot position support consistent technique.

Practical guidance

Keep your knees and feet aligned naturally and move through the ankles rather than bouncing. Use a stable platform or calf machine when loading heavily, and increase resistance gradually. Reduce the range or stop if you experience sharp pain or cannot maintain balance.
