Execution

  1. 1
Begin on your hands and knees, ensuring that your hands are placed directly under your shoulders and your knees under your hips.
  2. 2
Press your palms firmly into the mat and lift your hips up and back, creating an inverted V shape with your body.
  3. 3
Make sure your head hangs between your arms, your back is straight, and your heels press toward the floor (it is okay if they do not touch the floor).
  4. 4
Try to draw your shoulder blades toward your spine and hold this position for several breaths.
  5. 5
To exit the pose, bend your knees and return to a hands-and-knees position.

Benefits

In addition to improving physical strength and flexibility, Downward Dog also helps promote blood circulation, relieve back pain, and stimulate digestion. It is an excellent exercise for relieving stress and improving concentration.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounding your back instead of keeping it straight.
  • ! Putting too much pressure on your hands or shoulders.
  • ! Forcing your heels toward the floor.

Key Muscles

This exercise targets the strengthening and stretching of the hamstrings, calves, shoulders, arms, and back. It also helps improve flexibility in your ankles and hips.

Possible Alternatives

If the full Downward Dog is too intense, try Puppy Pose or Modified Downward Dog with your hands on an elevated surface such as a chair or wall. For more of a challenge, try Three-Legged Downward Dog by lifting one leg while holding the pose.
