Alternating Bicep Curls
Alternating Bicep Curls is a popular strength exercise that targets the development of the biceps. This exercise offers the unique benefit of training each arm separately, which promotes balanced muscle development and allows you to focus on the form of each arm.
Execution
-
1
Begin with a dumbbell in each hand, arms at your sides and palms facing forward.
-
2
Exhale and curl one dumbbell toward your shoulder while keeping your elbow close to your body. Ensure that only your forearm moves.
-
3
Briefly hold the top position, then slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position while inhaling.
-
4
Repeat the movement with the other arm.
-
5
Alternate between both arms for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves muscle balance between both arms.
- Allows you to focus on the form and execution of each arm separately.
- Increases muscular endurance and strength in the biceps.
- May help improve grip strength.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, which can lead to poor form.
- ! Moving the elbows during the exercise, which reduces its effectiveness.
- ! Not fully extending the arms in the starting position, which does not fully activate the biceps.
Primary Muscles
The primary muscle group trained with Alternating Bicep Curls is the biceps brachii. The brachialis and brachioradialis are also trained to a lesser extent.
Possible Alternatives
- Hammer Curls: By holding the dumbbells vertically, you place more emphasis on the brachialis and brachioradialis.
- Concentration Curls: Performed seated, with the elbow against the inside of the thigh, for stricter form.
- Preacher Curls: Performed on a preacher bench, which helps stabilize the elbows and prevent them from moving.
