Alternate Incline Dumbbell Curl
The Alternate Incline Dumbbell Curl is an effective exercise for building strength and mass in your biceps. The incline position trains each arm separately, resulting in greater muscle activation and the ability to address imbalances in strength and size.
Execution
-
1
Find an incline bench and set it to an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
-
2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and sit with your back against the bench. Let your arms hang by your sides with your palms facing forward.
-
3
Exhale and curl one dumbbell toward your shoulder while keeping your elbow and upper arm in the same place.
-
4
Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position while inhaling.
-
5
Repeat the movement with the other arm. This is one repetition.
-
6
Perform 3 sets of 8–12 repetitions, depending on your training goals.
Benefits
- Improves biceps isolation through the incline position, leading to more effective muscle building.
- Helps correct strength imbalances between the arms.
- Increases shoulder stability through the controlled movement.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the exercise too quickly, which can lead to less muscle activation and a higher risk of injury.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing technique to deteriorate.
- ! Moving the elbows during the exercise, which reduces effectiveness.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the biceps brachii, with secondary involvement of the brachialis and brachioradialis muscles in the forearm.
Possible Alternatives
- Standing biceps curl for a more dynamic challenge.
- Hammer curls to involve the forearm muscles more in addition to the biceps.
- Concentration curls for an even greater focus on biceps isolation.
