| · 2 min read time

In 2023, wearable technology remained at the top, but the rest of the top list showed a clear return to strength and functional training.

Top 10 fitness trends in 2023

The ranking below follows the ACSM Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends. We keep the original terms recognizable so the list remains easy to compare with other years.

  2. Strength training with free weights
  3. Body weight training
  4. Fitness programs for older adults
  5. Functional fitness training

What stands out in 2023?

Strength training with free weights in second place is a strong signal. After the pandemic years, people wanted to make tangible progress again.

Body weight training remained third. The home and outdoor period had taught people that training does not always depend on machines.

Fitness programs for older adults rose to fourth place. Active aging became more visible as a structural growth market.

What does this mean for people who train?

For people who train, 2023 was a good moment to put technique and progression at the center. Free weights and bodyweight training require control and planning.

Run your fitness business with more structure

  • Planning, member management and coaching in one platform
  • Built for coaches, studios and gyms
  • Fewer separate tools, more overview

Wearables can support strength training, but they cannot measure everything. Training logs, technique videos and subjective fatigue remain relevant.

What does this mean for gyms and coaches?

For clubs, quality in the strength area became more important. More interest in free weights also means more need for instruction and safety standards.

Programs for older adults require a different tone than quick transformations. Balance, maintaining muscle mass and self-confidence are often more important there.

How does 2023 fit into the longer trend?

2023 shows the market recovering from the online peak. In 2024, the picture becomes broader, with workplace wellness and mental health higher on the list.
