Lateral Raises
Lateral Raises are a fantastic exercise for strengthening and defining the shoulders. This exercise primarily targets the deltoid muscles, but also benefits overall upper-body strength and posture.
Execution
-
1
Begin standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
-
2
Keep your back straight and your core engaged.
-
3
Inhale and raise both arms simultaneously out to the sides until they are parallel to the floor, with a slight bend in the elbows.
-
4
Exhale as you slowly and controllably lower the weights back down.
-
5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves shoulder definition and width.
- Strengthens the muscles around the shoulder joint, which may help prevent injuries.
- Helps improve overall upper-body strength and posture.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, which can lead to poor form and possible injuries.
- ! Raising the arms too high, which places excessive stress on the trapezius muscles.
- ! Fully extending the elbows during the exercise.
Primary Muscles
The primary focus is on the lateral deltoids. The trapezius and some of the upper-back muscles are also engaged secondarily.
Possible Alternatives
- For beginners: Use lighter weights or no weights to practice proper form.
- To increase the intensity: Add more weight or use resistance bands.
- Seated Lateral Raises: Perform the exercise while seated to stabilize the core more.
