Empty Can

The Empty Can exercise is an effective way to strengthen your shoulder muscles, focusing on the rotator cuff. This exercise helps improve the stability of your shoulder joint, which is essential for both daily activities and sports performance.

Execution

  1. 1
Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms by your sides and your thumbs pointing forward.
  3. 3
Keep your arms slightly bent and raise the dumbbells out to the sides to shoulder height, rotating your wrists so your thumbs point downward as if pouring out an empty can.
  4. 4
Slowly and under control, lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

The Empty Can exercise strengthens the rotator cuff muscles, which may lead to improved shoulder stability and a reduced risk of injury. It may also help improve overall shoulder mobility and flexibility.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, which can lead to improper form and potential injury.
  • ! Raising the arms too high, which can place unnecessary strain on the neck and shoulders.
  • ! Losing control while lowering the weights, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise and increases the risk of injury.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the supraspinatus, one of the four muscles of the rotator cuff, but also engages the deltoids and, to a lesser extent, the trapezius.

Possible Alternatives

If the Empty Can exercise is too challenging, or if you want to add variation to your training, consider the following alternatives:

  • Internal and External Rotations: These can be performed with a dumbbell or resistance band and also target the rotator cuff.
  • Front Raises: This is an alternative that focuses more on the anterior deltoids but still engages the rotator cuff.
  • Lateral Raises: Keeping the thumbs up instead of down slightly shifts the emphasis to other parts of the shoulder.
