Benefits

  • Improves shoulder stability.
  • Helps prevent shoulder injuries.
  • Strengthens the muscles around the rotator cuff.
  • May contribute to better posture.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving the dumbbells too far, causing tension in the rotator cuff muscles to be lost.
  • ! Failing to keep the elbows close enough to the body, which can lead to incorrect execution and potential injury.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly, resulting in loss of control over the movement.

Instructions

  1. Begin standing in a neutral position, with your feet shoulder-width apart and a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Keep your elbows close to your sides and bend them at a 90-degree angle, so that the dumbbells are in front of you.
  3. Without changing the position of your elbows, rotate the dumbbells outward, away from your body, until you reach full external rotation.
  4. Hold this position briefly, then slowly return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the rotator cuff muscles, including the infraspinatus and teres minor. The deltoids and the muscles around the shoulder blades are also trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the dumbbell version is too challenging, you can start with a resistance band to master the basic movement.
  • For an additional challenge, perform the exercise seated on a fitness ball to also train your core stability.
  • Increase the intensity by extending the length of time you hold the external rotation.
