Standard Push-Up
The standard push-up is a classic exercise that has been used for decades to build strength and endurance. It is a versatile exercise that you can do almost anywhere and that trains multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
Execution
-
1
Begin in a plank position with your hands on the floor slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
-
2
Ensure that your body forms a straight line from your head to your heels.
-
3
Engage your abdominal muscles and keep your body rigid throughout the exercise.
-
4
Lower your body by bending your elbows until your chest almost touches the floor.
-
5
Push yourself back up to the starting position by straightening your arms.
Benefits
This exercise improves not only muscular strength but also muscular endurance. It helps develop a strong core and improves shoulder-girdle stability. In addition, it is a functional movement that helps with daily activities.
Common Mistakes
- ! Allowing your hips to sag, which can place pressure on your lower back.
- ! Keeping your elbows too far away from your body, which can lead to shoulder strain.
- ! Pushing your head forward or downward instead of maintaining a neutral neck position.
Primary Muscles
The standard push-up primarily trains the chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, and the front of the shoulders (anterior deltoids). The abdominal muscles and lower-back muscles are also used as stabilizers.
Possible Alternatives
If the standard push-up is too challenging, you can start with wall push-ups or push-ups from your knees. To increase the intensity, try push-ups with your feet elevated or add a weighted vest.
