Alternate Pullover - Woman Example
The Alternate Pullover is an effective exercise that targets strengthening your upper body, with a special focus on the chest, back, and arm muscles. This exercise is unique because it combines a dynamic movement with core stability, so you not only build strength but also improve your balance and coordination.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back on a flat bench with a dumbbell in each hand. Hold the dumbbells above your chest with your arms straight and your palms facing each other.
-
2
Inhale and slowly and controllably lower one dumbbell behind your head. Keep your other arm extended above your chest.
-
3
Exhale as you bring the dumbbell back to the starting position.
-
4
Repeat the movement with the other arm. This completes one repetition.
-
5
Perform 3 sets of 10–12 repetitions, depending on your fitness level.
Benefits
- Improves the flexibility and range of motion of the shoulder joints.
- Strengthens multiple muscle groups at once, providing an efficient workout.
- Helps develop better posture by strengthening the back and chest muscles.
- May help reduce the risk of shoulder injuries.
Common Mistakes
- ! Moving too quickly: It is important to perform the movement slowly and controllably to achieve maximum muscle activation and prevent injuries.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy: Start with a lighter weight to ensure proper form and gradually increase the weight.
- ! Not keeping your back flat: Make sure your back lies flat on the bench to prevent unnecessary strain on your lower back.
Key Muscles
The Alternate Pullover primarily trains the pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, and triceps. The muscles around your core and shoulders are also activated for stability.
Possible Alternatives
- For beginners: Use a single lighter dumbbell and perform the exercise with both hands at the same time.
- To increase the intensity: Add a slight twist to your wrist as you bring the dumbbell up to activate the triceps more.
- If you do not have access to dumbbells, you can also perform this exercise with a filled water bottle or another weight.
