The incline push-up with a bench is an excellent variation of the traditional push-up. This exercise targets the upper chest muscles and shoulders and is ideal for building upper-body strength with reduced stress on the wrists and shoulders.

Execution

  1. 1
Find a stable bench or a sturdy elevated surface.
  2. 2
Place your hands on the edge of the bench, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Extend your legs behind you and place your toes on the floor so that your body forms a straight line from your head to your heels.
  4. 4
Engage your abdominal muscles and keep your back straight.
  5. 5
Slowly lower your body toward the bench by bending your elbows.
  6. 6
Push yourself up by straightening your arms until you are almost back in the starting position.
  7. 7
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the upper chest muscles and triceps.
  • Reduces pressure on the wrists compared with a standard push-up.
  • May help improve posture by strengthening the shoulders and upper back.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Sagging hips: Make sure your body forms a straight line. Sagging hips can lead to back pain.
  • ! Elbows flaring out too far: Keep your elbows at an angle of approximately 45 degrees relative to your body to minimize stress on your shoulders.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the upper chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, and anterior deltoids.

Possible Alternatives

  • Raise the height of the bench to make the exercise less intense.
  • Use a lower surface or switch to traditional push-ups to increase the intensity.
