Decline Push-Up

The decline push-up is a variation of the classic push-up that focuses on training your upper body more intensely. By placing your feet on an elevated surface, you increase the difficulty and place more emphasis on the upper chest muscles and shoulders.

Execution

  1. 1
Find a stable elevated surface, such as a bench or a step.
  2. 2
Place your toes on the elevated surface and your hands on the floor, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Engage your abdominal muscles and keep your body in a straight line from your head to your heels.
  4. 4
Lower your body by bending your elbows until your chest almost touches the floor.
  5. 5
Push yourself back up to the starting position by extending your arms.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and defines the upper chest muscles.
  • Improves strength in your arms and shoulders.
  • Helps develop a strong core.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Failing to keep your body in a straight line, which can lead to back pain.
  • ! Lowering or pushing up too quickly, which prevents the muscles from being trained optimally.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to flare too far outward, which places extra pressure on the shoulders.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, and the front of the shoulders (anterior deltoids). Your core is also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

If the decline push-up is too challenging, start with a regular push-up or an incline push-up, with your hands on an elevated surface. To increase the intensity, you can wear a weighted vest or place your feet on an even higher surface.
