Barbell Bicep Curl Wide Grip
The Barbell Bicep Curl with a wide grip is an effective exercise for strengthening and building your biceps. This variation emphasizes your muscles slightly differently than the traditional bicep curl, providing a unique stimulus to your muscles.
Execution
-
1
Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the barbell with an underhand grip, with your hands wider than shoulder-width apart.
-
2
Keep your elbows close to your body and your back straight.
-
3
Inhale and bend your elbows to lift the barbell toward your chest, without moving your upper arms.
-
4
Hold briefly at the top and contract your biceps firmly.
-
5
Exhale and slowly and controllably lower the barbell back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Strengthens and builds the biceps.
- Improves grip strength through the wide grip.
- Helps develop balanced muscle development.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, causing you to swing your body to get the weight up.
- ! Not fully extending or bending the arms during the exercise.
- ! Allowing your elbows to move forward or outward.
Primary Muscles
The primary muscle group trained with this exercise is the biceps brachii. The brachialis and brachioradialis are also trained to a lesser extent.
Possible Alternatives
- Barbell Bicep Curl with a narrow grip for greater focus on the long head of the biceps.
- Dumbbell Bicep Curls for a greater range of motion and training each arm individually.
- Hammer Curls to involve the forearm muscles more in addition to the biceps.
