Seated Overhead Press
The Seated Overhead Press is a powerful exercise that targets the upper body, particularly the shoulders, and offers a range of unique benefits. Performing this exercise seated allows you to focus more on the shoulder muscles without straining the lower back.
Execution
-
1
Find a bench and sit upright with your feet firmly on the floor.
-
2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and keep them at shoulder height, with your palms facing forward.
-
3
Exhale and press the dumbbells upward until your arms are fully extended overhead.
-
4
Slowly and controllably lower the weights back to the starting position while inhaling.
-
5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
The Seated Overhead Press helps build strength and size in the shoulders, improves upper-body stability, and contributes to better posture. In addition, performing it seated reduces the risk of lower-back injuries that can occur with standing variations.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight: Start with lighter weights to ensure proper form.
- ! Performing the movement too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to achieve maximum muscle activation.
- ! Not keeping your back straight: Make sure your back is straight and does not bend forward or backward during the exercise.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily trains the deltoids (shoulders), but the triceps (back of the upper arms) and, to a lesser extent, the upper chest muscles are also engaged.
Possible Alternatives
If you want to adjust the intensity or simply seek some variation, you can also perform the Seated Overhead Press with a barbell instead of dumbbells. For beginners, using a machine that guides the movement can be a safer alternative. Another variation is the Standing Overhead Press, which requires more core stabilization.
