Seated Bent-Over Rear Delt Raises
The Seated Bent-Over Rear Delt Raise is an effective exercise for strengthening the rear of your shoulders. This exercise also helps improve posture and balance muscle strength around your shoulder joint.
Execution
-
1
Sit on the edge of a bench with your feet flat on the floor.
-
2
Lean forward from your hips while keeping a slight bend in your knees.
-
3
Hold a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip (palms facing each other).
-
4
Let your arms hang straight down with the weights just below your knees.
-
5
Exhale and lift the dumbbells out to the sides until your arms are parallel to the floor, while keeping your elbows slightly bent.
-
6
Hold this position briefly, then lower the weights back to the starting position in a controlled manner.
Benefits
- Strengthens the rear shoulder musculature, contributing to better posture.
- Helps prevent shoulder injuries by strengthening the muscles around the shoulder joint.
- Improved muscle balance between the front and back of the body.
Common Mistakes
- ! Lowering the weights too quickly: use a controlled movement to achieve maximum muscle activation.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing your technique to deteriorate: start with lighter weights to maintain proper form.
- ! Not keeping your back straight during the exercise: make sure your back remains straight and does not round or arch.
Main Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the rear deltoids (back of the shoulders). The trapezius and rhomboids are also trained to a lesser extent.
Possible Alternatives
- Standing Bent-Over Rear Delt Raise: The same movement performed standing, for those who find sitting uncomfortable.
- Reverse Pec Deck Machine: A more stabilized variation that requires less coordination.
- Face Pulls: An alternative that also trains the upper back and rotator cuff muscles.
