Execution

  1. 1
Sit on a bench with an upright backrest and place your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with both hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Start with the barbell at chest height and press it straight up overhead.
  4. 4
Make sure your arms are fully extended without fully locking your elbows.
  5. 5
Lower the barbell slowly and under control back to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the shoulders and arms.
  • Improves overall upper-body strength.
  • Helps improve posture by strengthening the back and shoulder muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving the barbell up or down too quickly, which can lead to injuries.
  • ! Not fully extending the arms at the top of the movement.
  • ! Using too much weight, causing your form to break down.

Key Muscles

The primary muscle groups trained with this exercise are the deltoids (shoulders), triceps, and, to a lesser extent, the upper chest muscles. Your core is also engaged to provide stability during the exercise.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the barbell is too intense, you can switch to dumbbells for a similar exercise that is slightly less demanding on the shoulders.
  • Try the Standing Military Press to develop more stability and strength in your core.
  • For an extra challenge, use a stability ball instead of a bench to activate your core even more.
