Execution

  1. 1
Begin in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Place your hands at shoulder height as if you were holding an invisible barbell.
  3. 3
Inhale and begin 'pressing' your hands upward, as if lifting a barbell overhead.
  4. 4
Make sure your elbows do not fully lock out at the top of the movement.
  5. 5
Slowly lower your hands back to the starting position as you exhale.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

The Military Press Bodyweight exercise strengthens and showcases the upper-body muscles without the need for equipment. It also improves shoulder stability and may contribute to better posture and a reduced risk of injury.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving too quickly: Performing the movement at too fast a pace can lead to improper form and a less effective workout.
  • ! Locking out the elbows: This can cause unnecessary tension in the elbows and shoulders.
  • ! Leaning too far backward: This can put pressure on the lower back. Make sure your core remains tight throughout the exercise.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the deltoids (shoulders), triceps (back of the arms), and, to a lesser extent, the upper trapezius muscles (upper back).

Possible Alternatives

  • Push-ups: For a more accessible variation that also trains the chest muscles.
  • Handstand Push-ups: For a more advanced variation that requires more strength and balance.
  • Dumbbell Shoulder Press: If you have access to weights, this variation can help increase the intensity.
