Handstand Push-Up
The handstand push-up is an advanced exercise that combines strength, balance, and coordination. It is an excellent way to train your shoulders, arms, and chest while also improving core stability.
Execution
-
1
Begin by assuming a handstand position against a wall for stability. Make sure your hands are approximately shoulder-width apart.
-
2
Engage your core and keep your body straight from your head to your toes.
-
3
Inhale and slowly bend your elbows to lower your head toward the floor.
-
4
Make sure your elbows do not flare out during the movement.
-
5
Push yourself powerfully upward by straightening your arms while exhaling, returning to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves upper-body strength
- Increases shoulder stability and mobility

Common Mistakes
- ! Elbows flaring too far out, which can lead to shoulder injuries.
- ! Lowering too quickly or bouncing from the bottom position, which reduces control and effectiveness.
- ! Insufficient core tension, resulting in an arched back and inefficient movement.
Key Muscles
- Shoulder muscles (deltoids)
- Arm muscles (triceps)
- Chest muscles (pectoralis major)
- Core (for stability)
Possible Alternatives
- If a full handstand push-up is too challenging, start with pike push-ups to build strength.
- Use a box to place your feet on and perform a modified version with your hips high in the air.
- Reduce the intensity by performing push-ups with your knees on the floor or by using a Smith machine or resistance bands.
