Barbell Behind Neck Military Press
The Barbell Behind Neck Military Press is a powerful exercise that targets the development of the shoulders and upper back. This exercise, which improves upper-body stability and strength, is unique because of the barbell's position behind the head, providing a more intensive focus on the rear deltoids.
Execution
-
1
Begin by placing the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height. Stand under the bar and place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
-
2
Lift the barbell from the rack and let it rest on your trapezius muscle, just above the back of your neck.
-
3
Step away from the rack and place your feet shoulder-width apart, with your toes pointed slightly outward.
-
4
Inhale and press the barbell upward until your arms are fully extended.
-
5
Slowly and controllably lower the barbell back to the starting position while exhaling.
-
6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves upper-body stability and balance.
- Strengthens the shoulders and upper back for better posture.
- Helps develop symmetrical shoulder strength.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, which can lead to poor form and potential injuries.
- ! Lowering the barbell too quickly, resulting in loss of control.
- ! Allowing the elbows to point too far forward or backward, which can strain the shoulders.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the deltoids, especially the rear deltoids, as well as the trapezius, upper back, and, to a lesser extent, the triceps.
Possible Alternatives
- For beginners or people with shoulder problems: Use dumbbells instead of a barbell to reduce pressure on the shoulders.
- To increase the intensity: Add a slight rotation of the wrists at the top of the movement to further activate the shoulder muscles.
- Alternatively, the Standing Military Press can be performed for a more traditional approach that also targets the shoulders and upper back.
