Goblet Squat
The Goblet Squat is a fantastic exercise that improves lower-body strength and flexibility. Holding a weight in front of your chest, such as a kettlebell or dumbbell, increases the intensity of the traditional squat and places additional emphasis on core stability.
Execution
-
1
Start with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and hold a kettlebell or dumbbell with both hands against your chest.
-
2
Inhale and bend your knees to lower into a squat position. Keep your back straight and your chest up.
-
3
Lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor, or as low as is comfortable for you.
-
4
Exhale and push yourself back to the starting position by pressing your heels into the floor.
Benefits
- Improves lower-body strength and flexibility.
- Increases core stability and balance.
- May help improve posture by strengthening the back muscles.
- Suitable for all fitness levels through adjustable weight selection.
Common Mistakes
- ! Leaning too far forward with the upper body, placing strain on the back.
- ! Allowing the knees to collapse inward during the squat.
- ! Not lowering deeply enough, preventing the exercise from reaching its full potential.
Primary Muscles
The Goblet Squat primarily targets the quadriceps and glute muscles. The hamstrings, calves, and core muscles are also trained for stability.
Possible Alternatives
- For beginners: Use a lighter weight or even no weight to start.
- For advanced trainees: Increase the weight or add a pulse at the bottom of the squat position to increase the intensity.
- Also try a sumo squat with a kettlebell for variation and to target different muscle groups.
