Execution

  1. 1
Begin in a plank position with your hands on the floor, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Ensure that your body forms a straight line from your head to your heels.
  3. 3
Engage your abdominal muscles and keep your body rigid as you lower yourself by bending your elbows.
  4. 4
Continue until your chest almost touches the floor.
  5. 5
Push yourself explosively back to the starting position by extending your arms.

Benefits

  • Improves upper-body muscle strength and endurance.
  • Strengthens the core by stabilizing the torso.
  • Can help improve posture by strengthening the muscles around the shoulder girdle.
  • Flexible and can be performed anywhere without the need for equipment.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Allowing the back to sag or pushing the hips too high, which can lead to back pain.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to point too far outward, which places additional pressure on the shoulders.
  • ! Not lowering fully or not coming all the way up, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Key Muscles

Push-ups target several muscle groups, including the chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, the front of the shoulders (anterior deltoids), and the muscles in your core.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Wall push-ups or knee push-ups to reduce the intensity.
  • For advanced exercisers: Decline push-ups with the feet elevated or push-ups with a weighted vest to increase the intensity.
  • Varying hand position (for example, diamond push-ups) to emphasize different muscle groups.
