Incline Push-Up

If you're looking for an effective way to strengthen your upper body without going to the gym, incline push-ups are an excellent choice. This variation of the classic push-up uses an elevated surface to adjust the exercise's intensity, making it a great option for both beginners and advanced exercisers.

Execution

  1. 1
Find a stable, elevated surface such as a bench, step, or sturdy chair.
  2. 2
Place your hands on the surface slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Step your feet back until your body forms a straight line from your head to your heels.
  4. 4
Brace your abdominal muscles and keep your body straight as you slowly lower yourself by bending your elbows.
  5. 5
Push yourself back up to the starting position by straightening your arms.

Benefits

This exercise not only helps build upper-body strength, but also improves your posture and may contribute to better stability and balance. Because you can adjust the angle of the exercise, it is easy to vary the intensity and continually challenge yourself.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Going too deep: This can lead to overloading the shoulders. Make sure your elbows do not bend beyond 90 degrees.
  • ! Not keeping your back straight: A sagging or raised hip position can reduce the exercise's effectiveness and lead to back pain.
  • ! Hands too far apart: This can place extra pressure on the shoulders and shift the focus away from the chest muscles.

Primary Muscles

Incline push-ups primarily target the chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, and the front of the shoulders (anterior deltoids). The core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

To increase the intensity, you can choose decline push-ups, where your feet rest on the elevated surface and your hands are on the floor. For lower intensity, you can increase the height of the surface. Other variations include push-ups with one hand on the elevated surface and the other on the floor, or using an unstable surface such as an exercise ball to challenge the core more.
