Decline Kneeling Push-Up

The Decline Kneeling Push-Up is a variation of the traditional push-up that focuses on strengthening your upper body, with additional emphasis on the upper chest and shoulders. By using the knees and positioning the body at a decline, the exercise is more accessible to beginners or those working to build their strength.

Execution

  1. 1
Find an elevated surface, such as a bench or a stack of books, and kneel in front of it.
  2. 2
Place your hands on the floor, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, and your feet on the elevated surface.
  3. 3
Ensure that your body forms a straight line from your head to your knees.
  4. 4
Inhale and bend your elbows to lower your body toward the floor. Keep your elbows close to your body.
  5. 5
Exhale as you straighten your arms to push yourself back to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and defines the upper chest and shoulders.
  • Improves triceps strength and core stability.
  • Using the knees makes the exercise more accessible to beginners.
  • May help improve technique for a full push-up.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Pushing the hips too far upward or downward, causing the back to lose its straight position.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to flare too far away from the body during the exercise.
  • ! Not fully extending the arms at the top of the movement.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, and the front of the shoulders (anterior deltoids). The core muscles are also activated to keep the body stable during the movement.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, try placing your feet on a higher surface.
  • For lower intensity, perform the exercise without the elevated surface, simply on your knees.
  • Add a resistance band around your back and under your hands for additional resistance.
