Close-Grip Bench Press

The Close-Grip Bench Press is a powerful exercise that targets the development of your triceps, chest, and shoulders. The narrow grip makes your triceps work harder than in a standard bench press, giving this exercise a unique advantage for building arm strength.

Execution

  1. 1
Lie on a flat bench with your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with a grip narrower than shoulder width. Keep your wrists straight.
  3. 3
Take a deep breath and lift the barbell out of the rack. Bring the barbell above your chest with your arms extended.
  4. 4
Exhale as you slowly lower the barbell toward the middle of your chest.
  5. 5
Press the barbell explosively back to the starting position while exhaling.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the triceps.
  • Improves overall upper-body strength.
  • Helps improve performance in other pressing exercises.
  • May contribute to better muscle definition in the arms and chest.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Gripping the bar too widely, which shifts the emphasis away from the triceps.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to flare too far out, which can lead to shoulder injuries.
  • ! Lowering or pressing the bar too quickly, which reduces control.

Key Muscles

The primary focus is on the triceps brachii. Secondarily, the pectoralis major and anterior deltoids are trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the Close-Grip Bench Press is too challenging, try triceps dips or close-grip push-ups first.
  • For extra intensity, perform the exercise with dumbbells instead of a barbell, which requires more stabilization.
  • Use a resistance band to increase the difficulty by wrapping it around the ends of the barbell.
