Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a fitness mat with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in each hand above your chest with your arms fully extended.
  2. 2
While engaging your core, push your hips upward toward the ceiling so that your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.
  3. 3
While in this bridge position, slowly lower the dumbbells by bending your elbows. Keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle.
  4. 4
Press the dumbbells back up to the starting position while keeping your hips in the air.
  5. 5
Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions before lowering your hips back to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves core stability and strengthens the lower back.
  • Increases strength and muscle mass in the chest and glutes.
  • Helps improve balance and coordination.
  • May help reduce back pain by strengthening the core and glutes.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not fully extending the arms during the press.
  • ! Allowing the hips to drop during the exercise, which reduces the effectiveness of the bridge.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly, resulting in a loss of control and focus on the muscles.

Key Muscles

This exercise targets the chest muscles (pectoralis major), glutes (gluteus maximus), triceps, and core, including the muscles of your lower back.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the dumbbell press is too challenging, first try the bridge exercise without weights to build strength in your glutes and core.
  • For an extra challenge, try performing the exercise with one leg extended.
  • Use a stability ball under your shoulders to increase the intensity of the bridge.
