Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a flat bench and place your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with a grip slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  3. 3
Take a deep breath and lift the barbell out of the rack. Keep your arms extended above your chest.
  4. 4
Slowly lower the barbell toward your chest by bending your elbows. Keep your elbows at a 45-degree angle to your body.
  5. 5
Press the barbell back up to the starting position by contracting your chest muscles.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves upper-body muscle mass and strength.
  • Increases bone density through resistance training.
  • Helps improve overall posture.
  • Improves sports performance by strengthening the pushing movement.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lowering or pressing the barbell too quickly, which can lead to injuries.
  • ! Arching the back excessively, which puts too much pressure on the spine.
  • ! Not keeping the feet firmly on the floor, which can lead to instability.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to flare out too far, which can strain the shoulders.

Primary Muscles

The bench press primarily trains the chest muscles (pectoralis major), but the triceps and anterior shoulder muscles (anterior deltoids) are also significantly engaged.

Possible Alternatives

  • Dumbbell bench press for a greater range of motion and muscle stabilization.
  • Incline bench press to place more emphasis on the upper chest and shoulders.
  • Push-ups as a bodyweight alternative for training the same muscle groups.
