Overhead Cable Curl

If you're looking for an effective way to train your biceps, the Overhead Cable Curl is an excellent choice. This exercise uses a cable machine to maintain constant tension on your biceps, which can lead to effective muscle growth and strength gains.

Execution

  1. 1
Set the cable machine with the pulleys in the highest position and attach a handle to each cable.
  2. 2
Stand with your back to the machine, grasp each handle with an underhand grip (palms facing upward), and step forward until your arms are fully extended above your head.
  3. 3
Inhale and bend your elbows to pull the handles downward toward the sides of your head. Keep your upper arms still and move only your forearms.
  4. 4
Exhale as you extend your arms again to return to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Constant tension: The cable machine provides constant tension on the biceps, which may lead to greater muscle growth.
  • Focus on peak contraction: This exercise allows you to focus on the peak contraction of the biceps at the end of the movement.
  • Improved stability: Because you perform the exercise standing, you also work on your core stability.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight: This can lead to improper form and increase the risk of injury.
  • ! Moving the elbows: Keep your elbows in place to ensure that the focus remains on the biceps.
  • ! Not fully extending: Make sure you fully extend your arms in the starting position for maximum muscle activation.

Target Muscles

The Overhead Cable Curl primarily targets the biceps brachii, including both the long and short heads. The brachialis and brachioradialis, two muscles that contribute to elbow flexion, are also trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • Standing biceps curl with dumbbells: For when you do not have access to a cable machine.
  • Hammer curls: To involve the brachioradialis more.
  • Preacher curls: For a more isolated biceps workout.
