Body Attack: Group Interval Training by Les Mills
In addition to the well-known classes BodyPump, RPM, and Bodycombat, Les Mills also offers the slightly less known Body Attack. Body Attack is an intensive interval training in group sessions where your endurance and strength are challenged through a combination of aerobics exercises and strength training. Like other well-known Les Mills classes, the premise of this class is simplicity. If you want to work on your core, build endurance, or work on muscle building in a group setting at the gym, then Body Attack might be for you.

What is Body Attack
Les Mills International, the company from New Zealand behind group classes like BodyPump, Bodycombat, and RPM, developed Body Attack with the idea that the class should be simple and accessible to everyone. If BodyPump or RPM is a bit too intense for you, then Body Attack is a great class to start with. Don’t underestimate it; during a class, you can easily burn 500 calories. Depending on the intensity and effort, you can even burn up to 750 calories during a Body Attack class.
The class lasts for 1 hour and is conducted in group sessions. The music during the class is energetic, and the exercises mostly impact your endurance and strength, for both the lower and upper body. You don’t need any equipment, except for good shoes and your workout attire.
Because every Body Attack class should be accessible, there are no complicated movements during the class. Each class consists of 10 tracks, and the structure of the class follows a specific pattern, where each final track is designed to train the abdominal muscles.
The Benefits of Body Attack
- Accessible to everyone
- No equipment needed
- Endurance and strength training in group sessions
- Improves coordination and flexibility
- You burn 500 calories or more
The Difference with Aerobics
One of the biggest associations with a Body Attack class is with an aerobics class. Whereas aerobics typically keeps continuous contact with the ground, this is not the case with Body Attack, and there are jumps involved during the class. Additionally, the tempo in aerobics classes is often lower, making it less exhilarating and intensive. Also, the exercises in aerobics classes can often be less intense. This means you can burn more calories during a Body Attack class than during an aerobics class. Finally, all instructors certified for a Les Mills program are trained every 3 months for a new class. This ensures a higher level of variation, so you’re surprised with a new class every 3 months.
