Tricep Dips

Tricep dips are an effective exercise for strengthening the muscles at the back of your upper arms. This exercise requires little equipment and can be performed almost anywhere, making it a convenient option for your fitness routine.

Execution

  1. 1
Find a stable bench or chair and stand in front of it with your back facing the object.
  2. 2
Place your hands on the edge of the object, with your fingers pointing forward and slightly closer together than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Extend your legs in front of you and support yourself on your heels, or bend your knees for a less intense variation.
  4. 4
Lower your body by bending your elbows until your upper arms are almost parallel to the ground.
  5. 5
Press yourself up by extending your arms until your elbows are almost, but not completely, straight.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

Tricep dips help build strength and mass in the triceps, contributing to better overall arm strength. This exercise also improves shoulder stability and may help improve performance in other exercises and daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Going too deep: This can place unnecessary stress on the shoulders. Make sure your elbows do not bend beyond 90 degrees.
  • ! Pointing your elbows outward: This can reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of injury. Keep your elbows pointing backward.
  • ! Performing the movement too quickly: A controlled movement ensures maximum muscle activation and minimizes the risk of injury.

Key Muscles

The primary focus of tricep dips is the triceps brachii, but the exercise also engages the deltoid muscles (shoulders), the pectoralis major (chest muscles), and, to a lesser extent, the back and abdominal muscles for stability.

Possible Alternatives

If tricep dips are too challenging, try a simplified version with bent knees. For more intensity, you can place a weight on your lap or put your feet on an elevated surface. Other alternatives include tricep pushdowns with a cable machine or close-grip push-ups.
