Alternating Dumbbell Bridge Press
The Alternating Dumbbell Bridge Press is a dynamic exercise that combines strength and stability. By performing a dumbbell press in a bridge position, you activate not only your chest muscles but also your glutes and core for a full-body workout.
Execution
-
1
Lie on your back on a fitness mat, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in each hand beside your shoulders, palms facing forward.
-
2
Drive your hips upward into a bridge position, forming a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.
-
3
Press one dumbbell upward above your chest while fully extending your arm. Keep your hips elevated throughout the exercise.
-
4
Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position while pressing the other dumbbell upward.
-
5
Alternate between both arms for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves core and lower-back stability.
- Strengthens the glutes and helps improve posture.
- Stimulates coordination and balance through alternating presses.
- Increases strength in the upper-body muscles.
Common Mistakes
- ! Letting the hips drop during the exercise. Keep your hips elevated throughout the exercise.
- ! Lowering the weights too quickly. Focus on a controlled movement to maximally activate the muscles.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing your technique to deteriorate. Start with lighter weights and increase gradually.
Key Muscles
This exercise targets the chest muscles (pectoralis major), triceps, shoulders (deltoids), glutes (gluteus maximus), and core.
Possible Alternatives
- If the bridge position is too challenging, perform the dumbbell press without lifting your hips.
- Use a stability ball to support your upper back for an additional challenge to your balance and core stability.
- For a more intense variation, keep one leg extended in the air while performing the exercise.
