Benefits

In addition to building muscle mass in your upper body, this exercise also improves your overall body strength and stability. It also helps improve the functional movements you perform in daily life.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, causing your technique to deteriorate.
  • ! Arching your back excessively while pressing upward.
  • ! Allowing your elbows to move too far forward or backward.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscles trained with the Military Press are the deltoids (shoulders) and triceps, with the upper chest muscles and trapezius involved to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

If the Standing Barbell Military Press is too challenging, you can start with dumbbells or a seated version of the exercise to support the stability of your back. For an additional challenge, you can vary your grip width or use a push press, in which you slightly bend your knees to help press the barbell upward.
