Benefits

  • Improves flexibility in the hips and lower back.
  • Helps reduce pain and stiffness in the lower back.
  • Promotes better posture by loosening tight muscles.
  • May help prevent injuries by improving mobility.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving into the stretch too quickly: Take your time moving slowly into the stretch and listen to your body.
  • ! Not breathing: Make sure you breathe deeply and calmly during the stretch to help the muscles relax.
  • ! Rotating too far: Do not force the rotation. The goal is to feel a stretch, not pain.

Targeted Muscles

The Pretzel Stretch targets the glute muscles, lower back, and external hip rotators. It also promotes spinal mobility.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a less intense stretch, place your hand against your knee instead of your elbow.
  • If you have greater flexibility, try wrapping your opposite arm around your bent leg for a deeper stretch.
  • Use a yoga block or cushion under your sit bones for additional support if you have difficulty maintaining your balance.
