One-Arm Bent-Over Raise
The One-Arm Bent-Over Raise is an effective exercise for isolating and strengthening the shoulder muscles, with a particular focus on the rear deltoids. This exercise offers a unique way to train each shoulder individually, which helps correct muscle imbalances.
Execution
-
1
Find a flat bench and place one knee and the hand on the same side on the bench for stability.
-
2
Keep your other foot firmly on the floor and hold a dumbbell in your free hand with a neutral grip.
-
3
Keep your back straight and hinge at your hips so that your upper body is almost parallel to the floor.
-
4
Let the dumbbell hang with your arm straight and inhale.
-
5
Lift the dumbbell out to the side until your upper arm is parallel to the floor while exhaling.
-
6
Slowly and in a controlled manner lower the dumbbell back to the starting position.
-
7
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch arms.
Benefits
- Improves muscle balance between the left and right shoulders.
- Strengthens the muscles around the shoulder joint, which may contribute to better posture.
- Isolating the rear deltoids supports more complete shoulder development.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, which can lead to less effective muscle activation and an increased risk of injury.
- ! Using too much weight, which causes technique to deteriorate and places unnecessary strain on other muscles.
- ! Not fully extending the arm at the beginning of the exercise, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
Key Muscles
The primary focus is on the rear deltoids. The trapezius, rhomboids, and, to a lesser extent, the biceps are also trained secondarily.
Possible Alternatives
- Standing One-Arm Cable Raise: Use a cable machine instead of a dumbbell for constant resistance throughout the movement.
- One-Arm Bent-Over Reverse Fly: Place more emphasis on the rear deltoids by moving the dumbbell out to the side and upward in a fly motion.
- Increase the intensity by performing the exercise with a pause at the top of the movement.
