Machine Lateral Raises

The machine lateral raise is an effective exercise for strengthening and defining the shoulder muscles, particularly the deltoids. This exercise provides a controlled movement, reducing the risk of injury and allowing you to focus fully on muscle contraction.

  • Machine Lateral Raises

Execution

  1. 1
Sit on the machine with your back straight against the backrest and grip the handles.
  2. 2
Adjust the machine so that the handles are at shoulder height when your arms are extended.
  3. 3
Inhale and slowly lift the handles until your arms are parallel to the floor. Make sure you control the movement and primarily use your shoulders.
  4. 4
Hold this position briefly, then slowly return the handles to the starting position while exhaling.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves shoulder symmetry and shape.
  • Reduces the risk of shoulder injuries by strengthening the surrounding muscles.
  • Ideal for beginners and people recovering from injuries because of the controlled movement.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lifting the weights too quickly, using momentum instead of muscle strength.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing form to break down.
  • ! Not moving through the full range of motion, preventing the muscles from being trained optimally.

Primary Muscles

The primary focus is on the lateral deltoids. The anterior deltoids and, to a lesser extent, the trapezius muscles are also engaged.

Possible Alternatives

  • Dumbbell Lateral Raises: For when you do not have access to the machine or want greater muscle stabilization.
  • Cable Lateral Raises: Provides constant resistance throughout the movement for a more intense workout.
  • Standing Lateral Raises with resistance bands: A good alternative for home or travel.
