Dumbbell Rear Lateral Raise
The Dumbbell Rear Lateral Raise is an effective exercise for strengthening the muscles in your upper back and shoulders. This exercise not only helps build muscle mass but also improves your posture and stability.
Execution
-
1
Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand.
-
2
Bend your knees slightly and hinge your upper body forward from your hips, keeping your back straight.
-
3
Let your arms hang straight down, with your palms facing each other.
-
4
Exhale and raise the dumbbells out to the sides until your arms are parallel to the floor, with a slight bend in your elbows.
-
5
Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top.
-
6
Inhale and slowly and controllably lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
Benefits

Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, which can lead to poor form and possible injuries.
- ! Bending the elbows too much during the exercise.
- ! Failing to keep the upper body stable and moving too much during the lift.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the rear deltoids (back of the shoulders), but also trains the trapezius (upper back) and the rhomboids (between the shoulder blades).
Possible Alternatives
- Use resistance bands instead of dumbbells for a different form of resistance.
- Perform the exercise seated on a bench to increase upper-body stability.
- Change the angle of your torso to emphasize different parts of the shoulder.
