Execution

  1. 1
Begin on your hands and knees, ensuring that your hands are positioned directly under your shoulders and your knees under your hips.
  2. 2
Press your palms firmly into the mat and lift your knees off the floor. Straighten your legs without fully locking your knees.
  3. 3
Lengthen your spine by pushing your buttocks up and back. Your body should now form an inverted V shape.
  4. 4
Keep your head between your arms, with your gaze directed toward your legs.
  5. 5
Try to press your heels toward the floor for a deeper stretch. Stay in this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Benefits

In addition to improving flexibility and strengthening the muscles, Downward Dog also helps relieve stress, calm the mind, and improve blood circulation. It may even help relieve headaches and insomnia.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounding your back instead of keeping it straight.
  • ! Putting too much pressure on your arms, causing your shoulders to rise.
  • ! Trying to force your heels toward the floor too much.

Primary Muscles

This exercise targets several muscle groups, including the hamstrings, deltoids, triceps, and the muscles along your spine. It is also great for strengthening your core.

Possible Alternatives

If the standard Downward Dog is too intense, try one of these variations:

  • Place a folded blanket under your hands or feet for extra support.
  • Bend your knees slightly if straightening your legs is uncomfortable.
  • Use a wall for support by placing your hands on the wall instead of on the floor.

These adjustments can help reduce the intensity of the exercise and increase comfort.
