Cable Lateral Raise
The Cable Lateral Raise is an effective exercise for strengthening and defining your shoulders. This exercise provides constant resistance through the cable, creating a unique challenge compared with traditional dumbbell exercises.
Execution
-
1
Set the cable machine to the lowest position and attach a single handle.
-
2
Stand sideways to the machine with the cable behind you. Grip the handle with the hand farthest from the machine.
-
3
Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, slightly bend your knees, and keep your back straight.
-
4
Inhale and raise your arm laterally to shoulder height, with a slight bend in your elbow.
-
5
Slowly and controllably lower your arm back to the starting position while exhaling.
-
6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.
Benefits
- Improves shoulder stability and mobility.
- Provides better muscle definition and separation.
- Helps correct muscle imbalances between the left and right sides.
- Offers a safe way to train the shoulders with less risk of injury.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly: Use a slow, controlled movement.
- ! Using too much weight: Start with a lighter weight to maintain proper form.
- ! Raising the arm too high: Do not raise your arm higher than shoulder height to prevent overloading.
Primary Muscles
The primary focus is on the lateral deltoids (the middle shoulder muscles). The anterior and posterior deltoids, as well as the trapezius, are also trained lightly as secondary muscles.
Possible Alternatives
- Dumbbell Lateral Raise: For when you do not have access to a cable machine.
- Seated Cable Lateral Raise: For a more stable execution and less strain on the lower back.
- Resistance Band Lateral Raise: A good option for home or when traveling.
