Barbell Behind Neck Push Press

The Barbell Behind Neck Push Press is a dynamic compound exercise that develops strength, explosiveness, and stability in your upper body. This exercise combines a traditional overhead press with a subtle knee bend to create momentum, allowing you to move heavier weights than with a standard shoulder press.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin with the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height. Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and position the barbell behind your neck on your trapezius.
  2. 2
Step away from the rack and position your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Inhale and slightly bend your knees while keeping your torso upright.
  4. 4
Explosively extend your legs and use this momentum to press the barbell overhead. Ensure that your arms are fully extended.
  5. 5
Lower the barbell in a controlled manner back to the starting position behind your neck.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves explosive strength, which is especially useful for athletes.
  • Stimulates shoulder muscle growth by allowing the use of heavier weights.
  • Increases stability and coordination through the involvement of multiple muscle groups.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Starting too quickly with weights that are too heavy, which can lead to injuries. Start light and gradually work your way up.
  • ! Pressing the barbell too far forward or backward. Ensure that the barbell moves straight up and down.
  • ! Not fully extending the arms at the top of the movement.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the deltoids (shoulders), but also engages the triceps, upper back, and, to a lesser extent, the chest muscles. The legs and core are also activated to provide stability during the exercise.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners or those with limited shoulder mobility, try the dumbbell or kettlebell push press.
  • To increase the intensity, add a squat to the movement before pressing the barbell upward.
  • Alternatively, the Standing Military Press can be used to place more focus on the shoulders without using the legs for momentum.
