Seated Leg Extension
The Seated Leg Extension is a popular exercise for strengthening your quadriceps, the muscles at the front of your thighs. This exercise is unique because it focuses on isolating the quadriceps without placing much stress on the knees, provided it is performed correctly.
Execution
-
1
Find a leg extension machine and adjust it to your height. The pad should rest just above your ankles when you are seated.
-
2
Sit with your back flat against the backrest and place your feet under the pad.
-
3
Grip the machine handles for stability.
-
4
Exhale and slowly extend your legs until they are almost, but not completely, straight.
-
5
Hold this position briefly and inhale as you slowly lower your legs back to the starting position.
-
6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Strengthens the quadriceps without heavy stress on the knees.
- Helps improve leg strength and muscle definition.
- May contribute to better knee stability and function.
Common Mistakes
- ! Fully locking out the knees at the end of the movement, which can place additional pressure on the knee.
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, which prevents the muscles from being trained optimally and increases the risk of injury.
- ! Using too much weight, causing you to lose proper form and increasing the risk of injury.
Primary Muscles
- Quadriceps (four-headed thigh muscle)
Possible Alternatives
- If you do not have access to a leg extension machine, you can perform seated leg extensions with a resistance band attached to a fixed object or your ankles.
- Standing leg extensions with a resistance band for another variation that also challenges core stability.
- Leg presses on a leg press machine as an alternative for training the quadriceps with less isolation but greater involvement of other leg muscles.
