Lunges
Lunges are a versatile and effective exercise that targets several muscle groups in your lower body. They not only help build muscle mass but also improve your balance and flexibility.
Execution
-
1
Begin in a standing position with your feet hip-width apart.
-
2
Step forward with one leg while bending both knees to lower yourself. Make sure your front knee does not extend past your toes.
-
3
Your back knee should almost touch the floor.
-
4
Push yourself back to the starting position by driving through your front leg.
-
5
Repeat the movement with the other leg.
Benefits
- Improved balance and coordination.
- Increased leg and core strength.
- Improved flexibility in the hip flexors.
- Helps correct imbalances between the left and right sides of the body.
Common Mistakes
- ! Leaning too far forward, which puts too much pressure on the knees.
- ! Not lowering the knee of the back leg far enough.
- ! Allowing the front knee to extend too far past the toes.
- ! Not staying upright during the exercise.
Key Muscles
Lunges primarily target the quadriceps (front of the thighs), but the glutes, hamstrings (back of the thighs), and calves are also trained. In addition, the core muscles are indirectly trained for stability.
Possible Alternatives
- Walking lunges: walk during the lunges for additional movement and intensity.
- Reverse lunges: step backward instead of forward for different muscle activation.
- Weighted lunges: hold dumbbells in both hands for additional resistance.
- Side lunges: step sideways to train the inner and outer thighs more.
