Half Squats
Half squats are a fantastic exercise for anyone who wants to strengthen their lower body without having to reach the full depth of a traditional squat. This variation places less stress on your knees and back, making it an excellent choice for beginners or people with injuries.
Execution
-
1
Start with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward.
-
2
Inhale and bend your knees to lower yourself. Keep your chest lifted and your back straight.
-
3
Lower until your thighs are approximately parallel to the floor, or as low as is comfortable for you.
-
4
Press your feet firmly into the floor and straighten your legs to return to the starting position.
-
5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves lower-body strength and stability.
- Places less stress on the knees and lower back than full squats.
- May help improve mobility and balance.
- Suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
Common Mistakes
- ! Rounding the back: Make sure your back stays straight throughout the movement.
- ! Knees past the toes: Make sure your knees do not move past your toes as you lower yourself.
- ! Lowering too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to get the most out of the exercise and prevent injuries.
Primary Muscles
Half squats primarily target the quadriceps (front of the thighs), while also training the glutes, hamstrings (back of the thighs), and core.
Possible Alternatives
- Add weights (dumbbells or a barbell) to increase the intensity.
- Try a full squat if you are looking for more of a challenge and your mobility allows it.
- Use a squat rack to work safely with heavier weights.
