  • ! Make sure your knees do not extend past your toes during the squat.
  • ! Do not inhale while standing up; exhale.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle groups trained with dumbbell squats are the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and erector spinae in your lower back. Your core and the stabilizing muscles around your ankles and hips are also engaged.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can vary the weight of the dumbbells. For beginners, starting with lighter weights or even without weights can be a good option. Advanced trainees can increase the weight or switch to barbell squats for an additional challenge. Another variation is the sumo squat, in which you place your feet wider than shoulder-width apart and point your toes slightly outward.
