Execution

  1. 1
Find an elevation, such as a bench or a sturdy chair, to place your rear foot on.
  2. 2
Stand facing away from the elevation and place the top of your left foot on the elevation.
  3. 3
Make sure your front foot is far enough forward so that when you lower yourself, your knee does not move past your toes.
  4. 4
Slowly lower your body by bending your hips until your right thigh is parallel to the floor. Your left knee points toward the floor.
  5. 5
Push yourself back up to the starting position by straightening your right leg.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Benefits

The Bulgarian Split Squat helps improve balance, coordination, and the bilateral strength ratio between both legs. It is also an excellent exercise for strengthening the knees and increasing flexibility in the hips.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward: This can place extra pressure on your knees. Make sure your torso remains upright.
  • ! Step too far: Taking too large a step can lead to poor posture and a less effective workout. Find the right distance for your body.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough: Try to lower until your thigh is parallel to the floor for maximum exercise effectiveness.

Main Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the quadriceps and gluteus maximus. The hamstrings and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can add weights by holding dumbbells in both hands or placing a barbell across your shoulders. For beginners, the exercise can be simplified by choosing a lower elevation or performing the exercise without an elevation.
