Barbell Power Clean From Blocks
The Barbell Power Clean From Blocks is a dynamic exercise that targets explosive strength and speed. This variation of the traditional power clean reduces the distance the barbell travels, allowing you to focus on the explosive part of the lift. It is an excellent way to improve overall athletic performance.
Execution
-
1
Set the blocks at a height so that the barbell starts just above or just below your knees.
-
2
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, slightly bend your knees, and grip the barbell with an overhand grip.
-
3
Keep your back straight and your gaze directed forward as you pull the barbell upward by explosively driving your hips forward.
-
4
Once the barbell passes your thighs, pull the barbell upward with your arms while diving under the barbell and quickly bringing your elbows underneath it.
-
5
Catch the barbell at shoulder height, with your elbows high and pointing forward.
-
6
Stand upright to complete the lift, then return the barbell in a controlled manner to the starting position on the blocks.
Benefits
- Improves explosive strength and speed, which is especially useful for athletes.
- Increases metabolic rate, which can lead to improved fat burning.
- Develops coordination and balance through the complex movement pattern.
- Strengthens the core by requiring you to maintain stability during the lift.
Common Mistakes
- ! Starting the pull too quickly, which can lead to poor form and potential injuries.
- ! Not diving fully under the barbell, making the lift less effective.
- ! Failing to keep the back straight, which can strain the lower back.
- ! Not bringing the elbows underneath the barbell quickly enough, which makes catching the barbell more difficult.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily trains the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, lower back, trapezius, and shoulder muscles. It is a full-body exercise that engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
Possible Alternatives
- Power Clean from the floor for a greater range of motion.
- Hang Clean to place more emphasis on the second pull phase of the lift.
- Using dumbbells instead of a barbell for a greater stabilization challenge.
