Common Mistakes

  • ! Not lowering all the way down — make sure your arms are fully extended in the starting position.
  • ! Moving up or down too quickly — perform the movement in a controlled manner to get the most out of the exercise.
  • ! Not getting your chin above the bar — make sure you complete each repetition by pulling your chin above the bar.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the latissimus dorsi (lat muscle), but also trains the biceps, trapezius (traps), and forearm muscles.

Possible Alternatives

  • Chin-up: Grasp the bar with an underhand grip to place more emphasis on the biceps.
  • Assisted pull-up: Use a pull-up machine or resistance band to assist you if you have difficulty performing pull-ups.
  • Negative pull-ups: Focus on lowering your body slowly and in a controlled manner to build strength, especially if pulling upward is still too challenging.
