Dumbbell Chest-Supported Lateral Raises
The dumbbell chest-supported lateral raise is an effective exercise for strengthening and defining the shoulder muscles. Supporting the chest places more emphasis on the shoulders and reduces the risk of injury.
Execution
-
1
Find an adjustable bench and set it to a slight incline.
-
2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and lean your chest against the bench.
-
3
Let your arms hang straight down with the dumbbells beside the bench.
-
4
Inhale and raise your arms out to the sides until they are parallel to the floor, keeping your elbows slightly bent.
-
5
Exhale and slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves shoulder stability.
- Helps create a V-shaped torso.
- Reduces the risk of shoulder injuries by strengthening the surrounding muscles.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, which can lead to reduced effectiveness and possible injuries.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing technique to deteriorate.
- ! Fully extending the elbows during the exercise.
Key Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the lateral deltoids on the shoulders. The trapezius and rhomboids are also engaged lightly.
Possible Alternatives
- Standing lateral raises for a more dynamic execution.
- Seated dumbbell lateral raises to reduce the strain on the lower back.
