Svend Press on Incline Bench

The Svend Press on an incline bench is an effective exercise that targets the chest muscles with a unique twist. Unlike traditional chest exercises, this variation places more emphasis on the upper and inner chest, helping you achieve complete chest development.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin by setting the incline bench to an angle of approximately 30 to 45 degrees.
  2. 2
Take two small weight plates or one larger plate and hold it between your palms in front of your chest, with your elbows slightly bent.
  3. 3
Press the plates firmly together and slowly push them away from your chest while continuing to press your palms toward each other.
  4. 4
Fully extend your arms and squeeze your chest muscles at the peak of the movement.
  5. 5
Slowly and controllably return the plates to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves the definition and strength of the upper and inner chest muscles.
  • Helps develop a balanced chest shape.
  • Increases stability and coordination through the constant pressure between the plates.
  • Shoulder-friendly, making it a good option for people with shoulder problems.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not applying enough pressure between the plates, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Performing the movement too quickly, causing the emphasis to shift more toward momentum than muscular strength.
  • ! Bending the elbows too much during the exercise, which reduces tension on the chest muscles.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the upper and inner portions of the chest muscles (pectoralis major), but also engages the triceps and shoulder muscles (deltoids) to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a lighter variation, you can perform the exercise without an incline bench, simply standing or sitting.
  • To increase the intensity, you can use heavier plates or perform the exercise more slowly to increase time under tension.
  • Another variation is to add a resistance band around the plates to provide additional resistance during the exercise.
