Barbell Wide-Grip Bench Press
The Barbell Wide-Grip Bench Press is a variation of the traditional bench press that focuses on making your chest muscles wider. By holding the bar with a wider grip, you place more emphasis on the outer chest and less on the triceps.
Execution
-
1
Lie on a flat bench with your feet firmly on the floor.
-
2
Grip the bar with a grip wider than shoulder-width. Keep your wrists straight.
-
3
Take a deep breath and lift the bar out of the rack. Bring the bar over your chest with your arms extended.
-
4
Exhale as you slowly lower the bar to your chest. Keep your elbows directed slightly outward.
-
5
Press the bar explosively back to the starting position while exhaling.
-
6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Benefits
- Improves the width and definition of the chest muscles.
- Helps develop a balanced chest by emphasizing the outer chest.
- May help improve overall strength for other pressing exercises.
Common Mistakes
- ! Lowering the bar too quickly: This can lead to injuries. Use a controlled movement.
- ! Grip that is too wide: Although a wide grip is the goal, a grip that is too wide can lead to shoulder problems.
- ! Not keeping your back on the bench: Arching your back can cause unnecessary strain on your lower back.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the chest muscles (pectoralis major), with secondary involvement of the shoulders (deltoids) and triceps.
