Spider Curl with Barbell

The barbell Spider Curl is an excellent exercise for isolating and strengthening your biceps. Its unique benefit is that it helps you maintain a strict position, allowing your biceps to be trained more effectively without other muscles taking over the work.

Execution

  1. 1
Start by setting an incline bench to an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
  2. 2
Lie with your chest against the bench and let your arms hang straight down while holding a barbell with an underhand grip.
  3. 3
Exhale and curl the barbell upward toward your shoulders. Make sure that only your forearms move.
  4. 4
Hold the top position briefly and contract your biceps firmly.
  5. 5
Inhale and slowly lower the barbell back to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Isolates the biceps for more effective muscle development.
  • Limits the ability to cheat by swinging or using momentum.
  • Helps develop a peak in the biceps through full contraction at the top of the movement.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, causing you to swing or use your back to lift the barbell.
  • ! Not fully extending the arms at the bottom of the movement, which leads to reduced muscle activation.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly, causing the emphasis to shift from muscular strength to momentum.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle group trained with the Spider Curl is the biceps brachii. The brachialis and brachioradialis are also trained to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • Dumbbell Spider Curls for greater freedom of movement and the ability to train each arm individually.
  • Preacher Curls if you do not have access to an incline bench but still want to isolate the biceps.
  • Concentration Curls for another form of biceps isolation that you can perform without specific equipment.
